Distorting our history

KARACHI:

We have been distorting our history instead of being proud of our political struggle for independence. According to Stanley Wolpert, “Few individuals significantly alter the course of history. Fewer still modify the map of the world. Hardly anyone can be credited with creating a nation-state. Mohammad Ali Jinnah did all three”.

Not many are aware that Jinnah chose a Hindu Dalit, Jogendranath Mandal, as the first law minister of Pakistan. Mandal, who also played a key role in the creation of Pakistan, was given the task of formulating a constitution on the guidelines of Jinnah’s address to First Constituent Assembly on 11th August, 1947. Jinnah had never envisioned Pakistan as a theocratic state. Rather, he fought for equality and inclusiveness. He ardently believed in the idea of a modern democratic welfare state, a state where all citizens would be free to exercise their faith and enjoy equal rights irrespective of their faith, gender, ethnicity or race. It is extremely tragic that books taught to students across Pakistan have distorted the history by skipping such facts. Our heroes should also include women such as Fatima Jinnah, who stood up to challenge a military dictator.

Over the course of history, many youngsters have also played their part in making Pakistan an inclusive country that respects the rights of all citizens. Malala was shot by extremists for voicing her opinion on the right to education and Aitzaz Hasan was martyred while trying to protect his school from a suicide bomber in Hangu. These people should also serve as role models for us.
