KARACHI:
The documentary “The Extraordinary Life of Professor Javed Akram” directed by Kamran Faiq is a must watch for those who are looking to seek inspiration in life. Our youth, who easily get frustrated and give up on their dream after encountering small setbacks, will be highly motivated after watching this film.
Dr Javed Akram is the first Pakistani doctor to be picked for the prestigious UK-based Excellence in Patient Care (EPCA) Award in the category of “Contribution to the Profession”. Even though he was a man born into privilege, he remained steadfast in his passion and became a renowned healthcare professional. Dr Akram has served in several clinical and academic institutions. He has written six books, published over 400 research papers, and received numerous other awards including the Prime Minister’s Gold Medal for research in the field of Parkinson’s disease, the Best Research Award by the National Academy of Medical Sciences, and the Tamgha-e-Imtiaz. He is also among the front-line healthcare workers in the country. His heroic contribution in the form of treatment and research for Covid-19 patients remains critical in helping the government contain the tragic and cautionary epidemic. Humanity is bound to face one challenge after another but we are better off if we have visionary, caring and determined medical professionals like Dr Javed Akram. I have had the privilege of experiencing his medical prowess up-close. One is astounded to observe his brilliant diagnostic acumen, strong work ethic, absolute commitment, and dedication to serve humanity.
My definition of a role model is someone who maximises their potential to push the boundaries of their circumstances with integrity. Pakistan is blessed to have such an acclaimed role model.
