KARACHI:
The Covid-19 vaccination rate in Pakistan is one of the lowest in the world. Even though the vaccine was made available to the public during the month of February, only 5% of the total population has been vaccinated as of yet. Experts have postulated that hesitancy and unequal access are the two main factors that have hindered the vaccination drive in the country.
People are hesitant because of conspiracy theories, fear of side effects and lack of awareness. Some even claim that it goes against their religious beliefs. However, the unequal distribution of the vaccine, associated with policy implications and accessibility, has appeared to be the most significant barrier. Those in power have been able to get themselves vaccinated with considerable ease through bribes and political pressures. Ministers, politicians and businessmen received their vaccine when the first shipment arrived while rest of the population was kept waiting.
If the situation remains the same, Pakistan is likely to face a Covid-19 cataclysm — something that we have fortunately dodged so far. There is a dire need to mobilise local communities, the mass media, and relevant religious leaders to spread awareness regarding the matter. Furthermore, the government must address distribution issues, especially in rural areas, and ensure equitable distribution of the Covid-19 vaccine.
