Anti-encroachment drive

Letter July 01, 2021
An estimated fifty thousand people would go without shelter only from the dismantling of housing structures along the Korangi and Gujjar nullahs

KARACHI:

The Government of Sindh has announced providing plots of land to the families that would be left homeless in the wake of the anti-encroachment drive being carried out in Karachi on the orders of the Supreme Court. An estimated fifty thousand people would go without shelter only from the dismantling of housing structures along the Korangi and Gujjar nullahs. The total number of those to be displaced because of the anti-encroachment measures elsewhere is estimated to be twice as much, according to media reports.

While the Sindh government’s decision to provide a plot of land to the victims of the ongoing anti-encroachment campaign is commendable, some money should also be set aside for construction on such plots. In fact, the federal government should supplement the Sindh government’s move of providing plots by taking responsibility for construction. In no way can the people, who were compelled to reside along the banks of filthy nullahs, afford construction cost.
