KARACHI:

For the past many years, local researchers have seen a rising trend in drug abuse cases across Pakistan. While cannabis type drugs such as hashish and charas are most commonly used, there are thousands of drug abusers who are addicted to much more dangerous substances such as cocaine and meth. Drug abuse must not be glorified; it is something that ruins one’s life and leads to great grief and misery. Furthermore, it leads to serious mental and physical deterioration. If drugs are taken beyond a certain limit, it can adversely affect the body and threaten the individual’s wellbeing. Drug abuse not only affects the individual, it also destroys their family and loved ones.

According to a recent survey, a staggering 99.7% of drug abusers who want to seek treatment cannot afford it. The deteriorating state of rehabilitation centers across Pakistan shows that the government is not taking the issue seriously. They must realise that we cannot completely ignore such people, since they are a product of our own society. It is our shortcomings that have led to the exacerbation of such issues. Something needs to be done.
