KARACHI:
In its simplest form, language is a method of communication whereby words are used in a structured manner to create signs that can be interpreted as meanings. It is also through language that we can express our feelings in words, and preserve and protect our history and literature.
In Pakistan there are five main languages including Sindhi, Punjabi, Balochi, Pashto and Seraiki. Each language represents its own culture and has its own rich literature. But, unfortunately these languages are not declared as national languages of Pakistan and hence their essence and cultural relevance have slowly withered away, and English has taken over.
Why must there be one national language when the nation itself is comprised of multiple cultures and traditions? The government should acknowledge diversity and give each language its own significance. All major languages should be included in the education system and taught to children from a young age.
