Smart lockdown?

People are already fighting against the curse of poverty

KARACHI:

After suffering for a year from uncertainty, it is fair to say that there is nothing smart about “smart lockdowns” being implemented across the country. The purpose of putting such restrictions is to curb the spread of the deadly virus by preventing social interactions and mass gatherings. According to Prime Minister Imran Khan, imposing a smart lockdown would provide relief and ease the restrictions on to the labour class and the lower strata so that they could survive economically along with fending off the virus.

People are already fighting against the curse of poverty. Now they also have to fight against the restrictions imposed on them because of the raging pandemic. Unfortunately, closing down major parts of cities after 6pm has proven to be counter-intuitive. In fact, it has urged people to violate basic SOPs such as wearing masks and maintaining social distancing. Since businesses and shops are to be closed after 6pm — whereas a total shutdown is to be maintained during the weekends — people are thronging marketplaces in order to store up essential everyday items. An insane amount of people have been observed gathering in shops especially in departmental stores before 6pm. It is out of question to ensure proper implementation of SOPs in such a situation.

The only thing that can curb the spread if we consistently follow basic SOP protocols that have been set by WHO. In order to achieve herd immunity, the people must continue to vaccinate themselves and urge others to do so as well. As far as the smart lockdown strategy is concerned, the government must rethink its purpose.
