Water conservation

Letter April 25, 2021
One only hopes that the ghost of Justice Munir does not haunt the corridors of our judiciary

Water is one of the most priceless resources on the globe. In Pakistan, frequent water shortages have had a great impact on human health, socio-economic development and the environment. Being an agrarian country, Pakistan mostly depends on agriculture for sustenance. Considering the fact that the country’s agriculture and farming sector consumes the most amount of water available, and that scientists now claim that Pakistan might run out of water by 2025, food insecurity becomes a looming issue. Therefore, water conservation must be a priority, as it is a key component of sustainable water management.

In this regard, water could be reclaimed by improving and adopting water management systems and employing filtration plants and rain reservoirs. By harvesting rainwater and filtering waste water we can save as well as re-use water. The government must encourage the sustainable development by providing farmers and businessmen with incentives. By charting out a systematic plan, we can stop the unfolding crisis, or at least soften its blow.
