KARACHI:
It has been more than a decade since the bedlam in Syria has been aggravating in full swing. The Syrian crisis, which sparked after Arab Spring in 2011, has transcendent into a fiasco, annihilating people’s social life on the one hand and destroying the economy on the other. According to the UN Refugees Agency, there are almost 6.2 million people that have been internally displaced, including 5.7 million who have fled abroad. Most worryingly is the fact that more than 250,000 people have been killed.
It is without a doubt that the Syrian refugee crisis has become the largest present-day humanitarian crisis. Although the UN Security Council has called upon a special session aimed at resolving the issue, it seems that both Russia and China are eager to veto it, in order to further their own interest amid the crisis. The alpha and omega of this unresolved issue is nothing else but vested interests of international players. Nevertheless, the UN, considered as the champions of human rights, should play its designated role to figure out a plan of action. Resolving this conundrum and restoring normality in Syria is our moral responsibility.
