Power games

Letter April 11, 2021
Pakistan has been driven into an economic quagmire by power-hungry politicians

ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan has been driven into an economic quagmire by power-hungry politicians — be they in the government or in the opposition. Yet they blame each other for this disaster. Whosoever assumes power blames his predecessors for all the ills. They have never realised that without a stable economy, no country can progress in any sector. They seem to be experts in derogating their opponents and puffing themselves up.

A few days ago, Ahsan Iqbal, a senior member of PML-N, taunted the chairman of the PPP, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, that he was a newborn in politics. PPP leaders taunted back saying that Maryam Nawaz was not a mature politician. These leaders learn no lessons from their mistakes and keep drumbeating their sincerity for the country while casting doubts on the sincerity of their opponents. The political leaders always raise the slogan of democracy but trample it if they don’t get power. The present tug of war for power between the ruling party and the PDM; and between the PDM and the PPP does not auger well for democracy and the future of Pakistan.
