The noble profession of nursing

KARACHI:

Nursing is a noble profession which requires strong commitment, a great deal of tolerance and a deep sense of immolation for humanity. A nurse is a person whose job is to take care of the sick. While both males and females work as professional nurses, the latter are there in majority. Females are more suitable to perform the job of nursing as they are more sensitive, caring and tolerant.

Nursing is an old profession — and a sacred one too. Its history is as ancient as that of human civilisation. The role of a nurse has always been prominent, and reminds one of great humanitarian figures like Florence Nightingale who was known as a lady with the lamp, and Mother Teresa who devoted her whole life to this holy profession and earned the Nobel Prize for her services.

The profession of nursing has evolved over the years. Nurses have at times to perform during emergencies and during wars also. That’s why today a nurse is required to attain proper education and training before he or she takes up this challenging profession. And that’s also way trained and qualified nurses are in great demand the world over — especially in Europe where not too many opt for this difficult profession.

The nurse is a link between the doctor and the patient. For this reason, her role becomes central to healthcare provision. Their role during the reigning Covid-19 pandemic has also been commendable. A large number of nurses — as well as doctors and paramedics — worked in close proximity of the infected patients in our own country and other parts of the world without caring for their own lives. Many of them had to lay down their lives in this service of mankind. The nursing professionals thus deserve our salute. Hats off of these selfless professionals!
