Weather preparedness

Letter March 28, 2021
The farmers in Sindh and lower Punjab should prepare to harvest and safely store their crops in a timely manner

ISLAMABAD:

The current spell of heavy rainfall across some regions of Pakistan is yet another reminder that weather patterns are significantly changing. With the weather becoming all the more erratic, unpredictable and extreme, we are constantly forced to prepare and adjust to these changes. While this spell of rain is welcomed by farmers of the upper Punjab region, it poses a huge risk to farmers in Sindh since the wheat crop is almost ready for harvest. Hopefully, it will not do much harm. However, we might not be so lucky if such spells continue to persist in the near future.

The farmers in Sindh and lower Punjab should prepare to harvest and safely store their crops in a timely manner. A delay in harvesting may lead to damage in the event of an unpredictable spell of heavy rain which could occur in the next few months. Our leaders seem to be busy in conspiracies. They must realise that the people are fed up with constant political bickering and mudslinging. For once they should at least think about the country and work to help educate farmers and growers on how to stay resilient in the midst of changing weather patterns.

It is a shame that despite
Pakistan being an agricultural country, we are still importing wheat, pulses, and other edibles for domestic consumption. I am afraid that if our leaders do not set aside their differences and work collectively to save the dwindling economy, the situation might spiral out of control. Let us all rise above our petty personal interests and work for the betterment of
the country. We are only if the country is.
