Transport woes

Letter March 25, 2021
According to Bloomberg’s report, Karachi’s public transport is the worst in the world

KARACHI:

According to Bloomberg’s report, Karachi’s public transport is the worst in the world. Karachi has a population of about 16 million — well, only officially speaking — while the number of people travelling at a time goes as high as 6 million. It is estimated that there are currently 4,000 public transport vehicles operating in Karachi with only 400 big buses and 3,500 minibuses and coaches. The number of buses falls short of the transport needs of the city. Due to the lack of capacity, buses are overloaded with passengers who can be seen climbing onto the roof and clinging onto the sides — which is a serious safety hazard.

Moreover, these overloaded buses do not follow a proper schedule. Apart from creating a system to regulate the movement of buses in the city, more buses should be introduced to fulfil the travelling needs of the people. I hope that the authorities concerned will pay attention to this problem.
