Education amid Covid-19

Letter March 23, 2021
All cannot be blamed on the disposition of the younger generations, since there are other factors that need to be taken into consideration

KARACHI:

Amid the pandemic, students are slowly losing interest in their studies. In my opinion, our collective attitude as a society is to be blamed for this. The truth is that we all want the easy way out. We think an ideal life entails sitting at home, attending classes on our laptop and watching senseless entertainment videos on Youtube. Hard work just doesn’t seem to be cool enough.

However, all cannot be blamed on the disposition of the younger generations, since there are other factors that need to be taken into consideration. The whole system of education seems to be in shambles. Curriculums and syllabi focus more on rote learning instead of imparting knowledge and understanding. Teachers focus on memorisation rather than developing skillsets that students can use in the real world. This divide between the theoretical and the physical makes it harder for students to understand the purpose of receiving an education in the first place. Now, to add to the already abysmal state of schools, colleges and universities across the country, lockdowns and quarantine measures amid the pandemic has made matters even worse. If the education system in our country keeps functioning or rather malfunction like this, our youth will be morally destroyed.
