KARACHI:
Scams have become quite frequent these days. People pretending to be representatives of a certain organisation try to fool you into giving out your personal banking information. I have been keeping tabs on these activities through social media and also receiving frequent reminders from my mobile banking service to stay vigilant. Recently, I received a call from a UAN number with the person on the other end claiming to be from my mobile wallet provider, asking me to reveal some personal information. Since I was aware of such scams beforehand, I refrained from giving him any details despite his insistence. After I hung up the call I contacted my mobile banking service, who told me that I had done the right thing.
Given the recent surge of such incidents, it is important that we all pay heed to repeated warnings given by financial institutions, authorities and regulators. These are imperative for the safety of our financial assets. Furthermore, authorities concerned should also take radical steps to ensure that techniques such as call masking are curtailed so that unsuspecting customers are not easily fooled.
