KARACHI:
There are a number of reasons why teenagers are addicted to drugs and harmful substances. Lack of self-confidence is considered as one of the primary causes of drug addiction. However, considering the multiple problems and hurdles that youngsters face in Pakistan, many can easily turn towards drugs as a result of excessive stress, peer pressure and lack of parental involvement.
Most young people who have just started their college life or have moved to a new city in search of a job often face discrimination and are bullied. They are more likely to alleviate stress through the use of drugs. Finding an easy fix often seems easier than facing the real problem and dealing with it.
Furthermore, in today’s highly competitive world, individuals often have to deal with peer pressure and therefore resort to using drugs to alleviate their sense of anxiety and inferiority.
Another primary reason for drug addiction is mental illness. People who are emotionally weak tend to feel depressed more easily. This coupled with a history of psychological trauma appears to increase the risk of substance abuse. According to recent research, more than 75% of people who suffered from psychological trauma use drugs as a part of self-medicating strategy.
One cannot ignore the fact that the availability of these drugs plays an integral role in the perpetuation of addictive behaviours. If the individuals grow up in an area where adults use drugs, then the person is likely to try the substance themselves. Setting a good example is extremely important to keep them off of drugs. Providing genuine information about drugs is the best way to prevent drug addiction. Awareness is key.
