Revive reading habits

It is important that people develop in them a sense of tolerance and openness whereby they have the patience to listen to different opinions

KARACHI:

The habit of reading contours the patterns of thinking, broadens vision and forces the reader to ponder on different aspects without restricting the flow of thoughts. It not only enhances the knowledge of the readers but also polishes their views, all the while giving them the ability to come up with new ideas and opinions. When such opinions are openly shared between like-minded individuals, a healthy debate starts in which people remain empathetic towards other viewpoints. Such debates are necessary for a society to function and develop in a healthy way.

This unfortunately isn’t the case in Pakistan. Regardless of being at either end of the political and social spectrum, people are not tolerant enough to hear an opinion that differs from theirs —thought remains dogmatic and ideas conservative. Such polarisation has given rise to a rather toxic culture where the left promotes the idea of political correctness masked over a very rigid authoritarianism structure. Fighting fire with fire will only make matters worse. Someone needs to come in with a bucket of water.

It is important that people develop in them a sense of tolerance and openness whereby they have the patience to listen to different opinions. It is important to consider all different perspectives before coming up with a conclusion on specific topics. Difference always needs to be promoted and accepted.
