KARACHI:
Yes, the economic situation in Pakistan is devastating, and yes, the rate of inflation and unemployment has crossed all limits. But we can by no means attribute all this to the pandemic. Years of corruption, mismanagement and negligence has created a toxic atmosphere where people in Pakistan are more focused on their own self-interests rather than serving their country. The deadly virus has merely highlighted the longstanding problem.
Under the directives of the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) and per the willingness of the sitting federal government, all commercial activities across the country have been allowed to continue in full swing from March 15. The condition of percent attendance at workplaces has also been relaxed while schools have already started to function five days a week with 100% attendance from March 1. Permission has also been granted for holding indoor ceremonial activities such as weddings and parties while cinemas and shrines have also been allowed to function as per routine.
Before taking such a rash decision, officials need to take into consideration that the virus is mutating and spreading at a rapid pace and not many countries are able to cope with it. A staggering 1,176 coronavirus cases were confirmed in a single day on Monday with health experts predicting the actual number to be much higher owing to the lack of tests being conducted. They have further expressed their utmost fear about speedy attacks of new mutations, which cause much severer symptoms.
In the light of the deteriorating situation, it is imperative that the government and the NCOC revisit the decision to ease restrictions. Pakistan does not have the required medical health facilities to cope with another wave of destruction.
