Violence against senior citizens

Letter March 07, 2021
It isn’t at all shocking that the number of reported cases is extremely low since not many seniors have the power or the means to file complaints

KARACHI:

There has been a sudden surge in cases of violence against senior citizens. Just last week, two different videos uncovering abuse against the elderly were doing rounds on social media. One of the videos, which depicted a woman beating up her mother-in-law, was secretly recorded by a housemaid. The very next day, a second video went viral in which a 70-year-old poor man was beaten and insulted by another adult male.

It isn’t at all shocking that the number of reported cases is extremely low since not many seniors have the power or the means to file complaints. Due to their physical weakness, they can neither talk or fight back and as a result suffer from continuous violence. Even though laws are well in place to empower senior citizens, the unfortunate reality is that there is no proper implementation. With yet another wave emerging, I urge the concerned authorities along with welfare organisations to come forward and play their role in punishing the culprits as per law.
