KARACHI:
This is with reference to the editorial ‘Person of the decade’ published in this newspaper on Jan 31, according to which two Pakistanis, Ms Bilquis Edhi and Prof Aurangzeb Hafi, have been shortlisted for the title ‘Person of the decade’ by an international web-based organisation ‘Impact Hallmark’. Undeniably, receiving such accolades after being shortlisted from among 1.6 million notables of 190 countries is a proud moment for the whole nation. Prof Aurangzeb Hafi, an erudite, a polymath and a discoverer, has won his spurs as a great scientist by his ground-breaking discovery of Magneto-Hydro-Tropism and now being acknowledged for his Magneto-sectorial model at international level. Moreover, a news article published back in 2003 brings into focus one of his commendable acts when he turned down the offer of two million pounds sterling and the British citizenship for providing the manuscript of his magneto-sectorial model, and prioritised his national interests over his personal gains. However, the heart of the matter is that devoting only two lines in a newspaper fails to do justice to his remarkable services to the nation because a scientist with such a towering stature deserves to be recognised properly in his own country through print and electronic media so that the dynamic youth might be enlightened about their unsung heroes and could get some inspiration to make Pakistan proud in the field of sciences.
