Wedding feast waste

Letter February 14, 2021
It is a common practice for Pakistani families to spend life’s savings on luxurious wedding

RAWALPINDI:

All of us talk a lot about changing our country for the better, but how many of us actually act in this regard. Out of the many things that go unnoticed in our dear country, the amount of waste generated by weddings is an issue that hasn’t even been considered as a problem.

It is a common practice for Pakistani families to spend life’s savings on luxurious wedding. What is shocking however is the sheer amount of food that is wasted. In social functions and gatherings, guests should not squander food by piling up their plates excessively. The size of the servings should be limited according to the appetite. Besides, the hosts should also act responsibly by giving caterers the exact number of guests invited so that the food is cooked accordingly, and there is least wastage.

Pakistan is host to the biggest armies of starving people in the world, therefore instead of throwing away the leftover food, banquets and food vendors can merely donate or distribute the leftovers to the poor and needy. I hope that the new generation understands the gravity of the situation and abandons the longstanding practice of having lavish weddings.
