Road accidents

Letter February 09, 2021
Apart from strictly implementing traffic laws, it is necessary officials initiate awareness campaigns so that people are aware of the dangers of road accidents and the safety measures

KARACHI:

Road accidents are perhaps one of the most overlooked problems in Pakistan. Globally, while 1.2 million lives are lost every year due to road accidents, in Pakistan around 30,000 people die in fatal crashes. This points to the fact that the transportation system of the country has been left in ruin and indicates that people refuse to follow the rules. As a result, they pay a heavy price while putting others in danger. Recently, a bus traveling to Panjgur met with a horrific accident which killed 14 people. This means that 14 families suffered for a mistake that someone else made. The fact is that people in Pakistan have forgotten how to empathise with their fellow human beings. There is no regard whatsoever for human life.

Apart from strictly implementing traffic laws, it is necessary for concerned officials to initiate awareness campaigns so that people are aware of the dangers of road accidents and the safety measures taken to prevent it. In the case of death, negligent drivers should be heavily fined or harshly punished to set an example for the rest.
