KARACHI:
Governance, according to conventional wisdom, is the synchronisation of societal/cultural habits, economic system and political institution towards the greater purpose of the existence of a nation state. Governance plays a critical role in the development of a country, both in moving it forward or forcing it to regress. Never has this been so obvious than in current global governance dispensation, especially during an unprecedented pandemic.
Currently, international think-thanks such as Think Long Committee for California, and the 21st Century Council, are delving increasingly into the idea of intelligent governance in order to encourage balance of power in the midst of the waning US hegemony and the shifting of sands in China’s favour. But what is an intelligent system? In a nutshell, the idea incudes three different aspects: involving people and voters in general short-term decisions-making; devolving power to the grassroots; and distributing decision-making power among different flanks of the administration. Only through proper implementation of the proposed arrangement can a desire of intelligent or prudent system of governance be achieved.
Recently, many have heard Prime Minister Imran Khan voicing his concerns over the frays of the current governance system that is inhibiting him from fully capitalising on his agenda. Here, it is imperative for the PM to pay some attention to new forms of governance system proposed by leading think-tanks which, if found effective, can be incorporated into the country’s governance system.
