Renewable energy

Such an initiative can only come to fruition if the concerned officials focus on renewable energy transformation

KARACHI:

Prime Minister Imran Khan’s ambition for resolving the energy crisis is a welcome call for the people of the country. As a nation, we should endorse the PM’s strong commitment towards climate change considering the fact that our country contributes to less than 1% of global emissions.

Such an initiative can only come to fruition if the concerned officials focus on renewable energy transformation.

Apart from using solar and hydro power the government can utilise waste. Pakistan produces a large amount of municipal waste — approximately 50,000 tons per day — in the form of livestock’s dung, solid waste, rice husk, and cotton stick with an exploitable potential of 5,000MW power. Furthermore, besides the reliance on public power producing sources, the government should encourage young entrepreneurs to work on innovative ideas in converting natural resources into power and also support the private sector in producing energy through alternative and renewable sources. Alternative measures need to be utilised in a way that helps out and contributes to economic development and national prosperity.
