KARACHI:
Unbridled corruption seems to have been gaining its ground in Pakistan and the vision of a corruption-free country now appears to be a pipedream. Claiming to put an end to rampant institutionalised corruption in Pakistan within 90 days and bring back the looted money siphoned off in foreign bank accounts, the PTI government has failed miserably from the very start to make any dent stifle corruption in the country.
In the current CPI report of Transparency International, Pakistan has dropped four spots in the perceived public sector corruption index, and is currently ranked at 124 out of 180 countries with a score of 31. What is shocking is the fact that such a drop has come about despite the extraordinary efforts of the National Accountability Bureau and the Public Account Committee, which claim to have respectively recovered Rs363 billion and Rs300 billion in the last two years.
To end corruption in Pakistan, the PTI government should stop their perfunctory measures and instead enforce some serious and concrete steps to ameliorate the situation. Overwise the people of Pakistan will continue to suffer and millions more will fall below the below line in years to come.
