We, the people

Pakistan has, over the years, witnessed a downwards trend in governance and accountability

KARACHI:

Corruption is among the root causes for a country’s downfall, especially when the elite class is involved in this menace. Such is also the case with Pakistan. Apart from institutionalised corruption that trickles down to petty theft and bribes, wide-scale corruption is rampant at broader level all across the country.

As a result, Pakistan has, over the years, witnessed a downwards trend in governance and accountability. Unfortunately, corruption has been ingrained in our society and those who come to power believe it is their right to misuse the public exchequer for their own personal gain. Whether politicians or bureaucrats, any individual who holds power uses it for corrupt and selfish purposes. The damage has already been done, therefore, the real question is whether we can reverse or fix it.

There seems to be a glimmer of hope. If the right people are somehow empowered, the civil society can take the lead in bringing about social change through peaceful means. In this regard, the internet and social media can play a crucial role for spreading the word and creating awareness. Until corruption is highlighted and those involved held accountable, institutions and systems within the country will continue to deteriorate. We, the people, need to step up and enforce democracy.
