KARACHI:
The mega-city Karachi, apart from being the largest city in Pakistan, is considered as the economic hub of the country. Yet it remains deprived of basic facilities. The city, according to the 2017 census, has a population of about 15 million — a number that is increasing at a rapid rate, due to which longstanding problems have intensified. Rampant corruption and misgovernance have also added to the misery of the people who are currently living in deplorable conditions.
The drainage and sewage system remain dilapidated, due to which sewage either seeps into water lines or inundates the streets, while the transport system and road infrastructure is in a complete shambles making it extremely tedious for everyday commuters to travel. Furthermore, there have been widespread environmental issues. Diseases like dengue and malaria are still major health concerns. In the midst of deteriorating conditions, millions of people are helpless. Unfortunately, they will continue to suffer until proper attention is given to the city. Radical changes need to be made in order to stop the city from bruising further.
