Trust deficit

Letter January 21, 2021
Trust between government officials and citizens can only be achieved through repeated interactions and ground-level understanding

KARACHI:

Former US President George Bush, in a reply to a question posed during the second presidential debate of 2000, asserted that the surplus in the budget reflects the ingenuity and hard work of the people, not of the government and its institutions. He went on to pledge to his people that a part of the budget surplus money would be returned to them in the forms of healthcare for all, increased government spending and lower taxes. Even though Bush failed to act on this promise after becoming the President, the American citizens still kept much faith in him.

Trust between government officials and citizens can only be achieved through repeated interactions and ground-level understanding. Unfortunately, officials in Pakistan remain oblivious of the hardships that the common man suffers from. Instead they are too busy filling their own pockets. The only way this country can move forward is if citizen put their trust in a truly sincere leader who can steer the country towards prosperity and development.
