Corruption breeds evil

Letter January 14, 2021
Pakistan’s history is a testament to the relentless abuse of criminal law that has over the years encouraged and fostered illegal and immoral practices

KARACHI:

Pakistan’s history is a testament to the relentless abuse of criminal law that has over the years encouraged and fostered illegal and immoral practices such as target killing, lynching and false accusations. Unfortunately, such unethical practices have taken the lives of many innocent people, and nothing is being done to stop it.

Critics have argued that the recent increase in crime rates is attributed to the failure of our justice system, which in turn breeds mistrust in the people’s mind about state institutions. However, it is less about illegal or immoral practices, and more about the corrupt mindset that is being perpetuated which makes people feel as if these kinds of acts are prideworthy. There are no denying that the situation has become so serious that gang violence is increasingly becoming the norm, violent demonstrations are not being condemned rather encouraged, women are being harassed and raped daily, and the bodies of unidentified children are being recovered from dumpsters and garbage tanks.

The country is sliding steadily into the pit of evil due to rampant corruption and a complete disregard of ethical norms and religious beliefs. Many have turned to such kinds of gruesome activities to feel a sense of well-being despite extreme inequality and a spike in mental illness.
