KARACHI:
Apropos to the letter titled “Euthanasia” published a few days ago, it should be noted that almost all major religions of the world including Islam and Christianity share the same belief: that of protecting the sanctity of human life. This means that the end of one’s life is preordained by our Creator. Therefore, no one has the right to end their life by choice.
Suicide is strictly prohibited in Islam while the concept of Euthanasia as assisted suicide is forbidden regardless of any medical, humane or ethical consideration. There are many verses in the Quran as well as sayings of the Prophet (peace be upon him) that emphasise on the importance of preserving life, clearly indicating that it is forbidden to intentionally end one’s life or to deliberately assist to hasten the death of any living being. Muslims are advised to be accepting and tolerant of all forms of physical, emotional and financial hardships, sufferings or illness. This does not in any way undermine the importance of providing the best possible medical treatment and the use of analgesics. Palliative care and hospices are recommended in Islam. All practising Muslim healthcare professionals around the world share this belief system and fully respect and protect human life by adopting a pro-life approach. Islam as a religion preaches hope against despair. Our focus ought to be towards addressing issues of hopelessness, anguish and despair of the terminally ill patients or people with deteriorating health conditions. They should not be thought of as a burden, and instead should be fully loved and cared for, as all religions preach kindness. It is important to make them feel warm and keep the flame of hope alive.
Even if, for the sake of a debate, Euthanasia is legalised, one needs to consider the fact that it can easily be abused. It may negatively impact the elderly and disabled instead of benefitting them. In my opinion, the concerned authorities in Pakistan must work to improve healthcare provision facilities so that we never lose faith and make peace with what is ordained by our Creator. Come and assist the living!
