KARACHI:
In patriarchal, misogynistic and conservative societies, birth of a girl is considered a curse. It even upsets mothers because they know the cost of bringing forth a female member in a male-dominated society. Even in today’s modern world, it is only the woman who is held responsible for the birth of a girl even though science has proved it wrong. Unfortunately, Pakistan’s is not a much different society. Not just in the countryside, even in modern cities of the country, the arrival of a girl is unwelcome.
The governmental — in collaboration with experts and non-governmental organisations — should launch mass awareness campaigns to change the primitive mindset that continues to haunt women to this day.
