KARACHI:

Sheikh Ayaz, who considered the most influential literary figure from Sindh during the 20th century, is best known for rejigging Sindhi poetry. Born in Shikarpur on 2 March 1923, Ayaz, from a very young age, was persuaded into exploring the diverse and mystical world of poetry. Kehaldas ‘Fani’ was among his early mentors and played a pivotal role in grooming him as a poet by introducing him to many different aspects of poetry and literature — something which Ayaz greatly benefited from for the rest of his life.

It was because of this that Ayaz’s poetry comprises multiple genres. He was not just a master of romance and love, but his lyrics were infused with emotions of hope and courage. The exuberant poet was always optimistic about a bright future for Sindh, and wrote relentlessly to keep the young generation aware of the upcoming challenges. His vast study of human history, society, and culture enabled him to create a sense of awareness in his poetry about the gusty social norms that were prevalent in society at the time.

Throughout his life, Ayaz campaigned against the feudalistic mindset, injustice, intolerance, extremism, and violence. He was often criticised by his contemporaries for his grim perspective against a particular class of society, but he remained relentless and passionate regardless.

Keeping in view his contributions to literature and his reputation as a lawyer, former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto appointed him as Vice Chancellor of Sindh University. Even as an academic he took steps to create interest among the students for literature and poetry. He was later bestowed with Sitara-e-Imtiaz for his remarkable literary work. The towering literary figure left this world on 28 December 1997 and was buried next to the shrine of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai. He will always have a special place in the hearts of his followers.
