Needless statements

Letter December 18, 2020
First World countries like the US are likely to survive the current global turmoil, given the strength of their institutions and writ of their constitution, we unfortunately may suffer

Irrespective of the statement by PML-N’s Maryam Nawaz about the death of her grandmother, the spate of needless statements made by many PTI members was not only in bad taste but also against the spirit of Islamic teachings and Pakistani culture and tradition. Prudence demands that sanity prevails. Therefore, political differences should not assume the status of tribal enmity.

This country faces multiple serious issues which include an acute economic crisis, threats of terrorism and extremism, and a deadly pandemic, all which pose a danger to the public. Such a situation demands that the federal government and all state institutions adopt the Quaid’s motto of Unity, Faith and Discipline — a legacy which was adopted by the Muslims in the colonial era and led to the independence.

It is important to understand that while First World countries like the US are likely to survive the current global turmoil, given the strength of their institutions and writ of their constitution, we unfortunately may suffer. We as a nation have suffered dismemberment in 1971 because of the failure to enforce necessary laws, and the harsh reality is that we might fail again. Violence or intimidation never solves political issues but always damages societies. Those at the helm of power must follow the Constitution in letter and spirit and those that have failed to offer their condolences to the Sharif family need to realise that hate only begets hate.
