Hike in drug prices

Letter October 03, 2020
Question of good governance seems a distant dream in Pakistan since it requires rigorously evaluating existing structures and policies

KARACHI:

I strongly criticise the government for allowing an increase in the prices of 94 life-saving drugs. This decision will not only add to the woes of the general public but also endanger the lives of citizens who are at the precipice of death.

What is more shocking is the fact that such a regressive decision came in the midst of global pandemic with countries already struggling to cope with severe economic conditions. It seems that the government is forgetting the fact that the vast majority of the population in Pakistan is poor. Therefore, instead of giving structural relief to the general public, it is apparent that all attempts are being made to further push them into poverty. Issues emanating from such extreme inflation include mental health issues, suicides and crimes. It is the public who is paying the price of the government’s misdoings.

Question of good governance seems a distant dream in Pakistan since it requires rigorously evaluating existing structures and policies. The government may have many priorities, but giving structural relief to public should come above all else. It is hoped that the federal government will reverse its decision soon and control inflation to the price of medicines and commodities affordable and accessible.
