KARACHI:
There is no doubt that sectarian tensions are a threat to national integration and unity in Pakistan. As the embers of hate are once again stoked, it is imperative for the government to remain vigilant so that history does not repeat itself in a much horrendous manner, leading to the spillage of innocent blood in the name of religion. However, while myopia and dogmatism have paved the way for much intolerance, it is the responsibility of the state to maintain control.
The recent events in Karachi that depict the flagrant show of sectarian divide and extremism attack the credibility of the National Action Plan. It is important for everyone to realise that violent incidents, in whatever context, lead to destabilising peace and harmony in the country. Furthermore, when such events are highlighted on the international media, which they often are, it is not only Pakistan’s image that gets tainted but the Muslims in general are thought of as backwards and aggressive. We need to understand that only by perpetuating peace can we spread a positive image of our country and our religion.
Pakistan has come a long way in dealing with issues that have challenged both the writ of the state and the law and order situation in our country. Therefore, at this critical juncture, the state needs to remain vigilant and suppress any violent eruptions that are slowly emerging across the country. They cannot afford to be slacking off in their response to the threat of instability that looms over us again.
