Save Karachi

Letter August 30, 2020
As citizens who have benfitted so much form this land, it is the least we can do

It is unfortunate that our rulers have failed to come together to solve the multiple crises that Karachi is embroiled in. The city that generates the highest revenue remains in tatters owing to corrupt practices and negligent authorities. Sadly, both the Sindh governments and the Centre are not willing to put their egos aside in order to rid the city of its problems. The irony is that cleaning and maintaining the city’s drainage system seems to be a formidable task for authorities that claim to make Pakistan one of the greatest countries in the world.

It is clear that the recent spell of heavy rainfall has unveiled the ugly side of a beautiful city — an image synonymous with Batman’s Gotham city, where looters and thieves control everything under the guise of their political manifestos. However, the one thing that remains absent from such a depiction is a knight in shining armour — a hero that somehow eventually saves the day. The current monsoon situation has made it evident that no one is willing to stand up and become the saviour that the city so desperately needs. Therefore, it is up to the citizens who bear the brunt of it all to stand up and fight for themselves and protect their beloved city from destruction.

Together, the people can become collective saviours and pave the way for a future that is safe and prosperous for the coming generations. As citizens who have benfitted so much form this land, it is the least we can do.
