Submerged Karachi

Letter August 30, 2020
It rained in Karachi on Thursday like never before

It rained in Karachi on Thursday like never before. It rained non-stop from the dawn to the dusk and later. While Karachiites have learnt to live with the menace of the rains and its aftermath, the Thursday’s rain was unusual, bringing problems of unusual nature. It was water everywhere and with the already dilapidated sewerage system overwhelmed, the water failed to reach the sea, its ultimate destination, and inundated the whole city.

The Pakistan Army and Navy lent at helping hand to the civil administration and provided relief to the citizens, which otherwise was not easy given the fact that many areas were inaccessible due to a huge amount of water.

However, it is satisfactory to see that with the combined efforts of the armed forces and the civil administration, many areas of the city were cleared in just about hours of the rain stopping. It is about time all the stakeholders sat with each other and to formulated a strategy to avoid urban flooding in the city in the future.
