Unemployment and depression

Letter July 26, 2020
PTI had promised that it would provide 10 million jobs over a span of five years

Unemployment increases the risk of depression; therefore, work is a very important pillar of human existence. Should this pillar collapse and unemployment settle in its place, the risk of succumbing to a mental illness increases greatly. The ever-increasing uncertainty in the job market and poverty in the country have resulted in students facing mental health complications.

A large number of students enrolled in various disciplines at public and private universities have been found suffering from anxiety, depression and other psychological issues, as per recent reports. Most students under stress have been concerned about their future career after the completion of their degrees, while the underprivileged ones have additional issues to think about like family pressure. The PTI had promised in its election manifesto that it would provide 10 million jobs over a span of five years, but on assuming power, it has so far failed to provide relief to the youth.

On the other hand, the government has started the process of abolishing tens of thousands of Grade 1-16 posts in the federal government that have been vacant for a year. It is important that the government concentrate on alleviating the problems of citizens and lessen the misfortunes of the next generation in order to secure the future of Pakistan.
