Shedding off myopia

Our staggering healthcare system has, by no means, the capacity to withstand the swarming number of Covid-19 patients

KARACHI: With more than 120,000 coronavirus cases and 2,300 countrywide deaths, it is hard to believe that many people in Pakistan still refuse to believe the severity of the pandemic. People have the right to form their own opinions but in the event of a global crisis one needs to make sure that people do not act in a way that may harm or aggravate the overall situation. It is important that people ground their opinion on some form of logic or scientific fact rather than blindly believing the absurd comments of certain leaders.

In such crucial times, when a person goes on believing that Covid-19 is a hoax and continues their daily lives without following the required SOPs, the person becomes a risk for the whole society. Our staggering healthcare system has, by no means, the capacity to withstand the swarming number of Covid-19 patients. Do we really want someone we know fall ill before we start believing in life-threatening consequences of the deadly virus?

The community and the state should work together in tandem and create awareness regarding Covid-19. Furthermore, the state needs to enforce strict implementation of SOPs that demand compliance and punish deviance. It is about time that people step out of their bubble and start to open up to the idea that the virus is an imminent threat.
