Covid-19 and depression

Letter June 11, 2020
It is essential to follow a normal routine as much as possible

ISLAMABAD: The Covid-19 pandemic and the resulting lockdown is taking a tremendous toll on the contemporary lives of citizens, including their mental health and social well-being. This public health crisis may have a significant effect on people who have been struggling with depression for a long time.

The stress of health risks that have been presented in the wake of the pandemic, the tragic loss of life, not to mention social isolation, lack of access to favourite activities, and an uncertain future is without a doubt putting everyone on edge. The emotional stress from Covid-19 and social isolation make any pre-existing mental condition worse while quarantine measures may prevent them from accessing their usual treatments, such as going to therapy sessions or adhering to certain lifestyle choices. People living with depression during this pandemic may find it difficult accessing their medications, face unusually intense fear about the spread and feel extremely anxious about their finances.

A range of different activities can help them stay grounded during such pressing times. It is essential to follow a normal routine as much as possible. Limit the time you spend engaging with the news and social media, try to get enough sleep and maintain your social relationships through phone calls. The dangers of isolation are very real.
