Cyclone disaster

Letter May 23, 2020
Amphan becomes the most powerful cyclone India and Bangladesh have witnessed in over 20 years

KARACHI: Cyclone Amphan has ravaged many parts of Bangladesh and India, with winds gushing up to 185 km/hr. Researchers claim that this seems to be the most powerful cyclone either of the two countries have witnessed in over 20 years while the UN estimates that 10 million people could be affected and 500,000 people might be displaced.

Till now, 95 people have been found dead with most of them either electrocuted by live wires or crushed under uprooted trees. The authorities are scrambling to organise a mass evacuation campaign in order to move the citizens to safety. In such testing times, Pakistan should set aside its political grievances and lend a helping hand to both countries in order to save human lives.
