Violence during lockdowns

Letter May 10, 2020
It is the time to understand the benefits of the motto: maximum happiness for the maximum number

LAHORE: It is strange to see humankind suffer yet not able to learn from the mistakes that have led us to our dreaded fates. There has been a sudden rise in news and posts that talk about violent acts happening all over Pakistan, ranging from animal abuse to the murder of a woman for not preparing a hot sehri meal for her husband. Is this what happens if people are asked to stay at home for around two months? Our patience and tolerance as individuals is disappointing to say the least and this pandemic has showed how incapable we are of dealing with such a world crisis.

One can only sit in fear and hope such acts don’t increase because it seems that the situation is not getting any better. While our medical staff, going through much emotional and mental trauma, works tirelessly and selflessly to heal our citizens, the people on the other hand are busy taking out their frustrations on the innocent. The matter has gone beyond awareness as people who participate in trying to educate people are in turn slandered by mobs of people on all platforms. It has become a matter of ego for people to react with anger when told that their actions are not only wrong, but rather inhumane. I plead to the government to formulate policies and schemes that enlighten our citizens about the barbarity of their acts. The only way forward as a country and a civilisation is to change our mindset. We should try to inculcate behaviours that promote the good of all members of society. It is the time to understand the benefits of the motto: maximum happiness for the maximum number.
