The true labourers are those who leave their homes on foot or on public transport to work in the heat
KARACHI: During the month of Ramazan we must not forget the daily wage labourers and small businesses that are suffering huge losses since the onset of the pandemic. Labour Day has just passed and while we would normally celebrate it as a day off from work, we must remember that there are thousands of people from the thelay walas to the rickshaw drivers who have lost their daily income which is often their only source of survival.
The true labourers are those who leave their homes on foot or on public transport to work in the heat such as construction workers or our domestic help. During these harsh times it is easy to be selfish and think about all the ways in which the pandemic has drastically altered our lives, but there are people who are now jobless, sitting at home with hungry mouths to feed. Let us use our zakat to help out such families and use this as an opportunity for community building.
Then there are also our frontline workers who are still working by putting their lives at risk on a daily. They are unable to simply sit at home to be safe from the virus because they do not have that liberty. Let us also remember them and their families. It isn’t easy knowing about this deadly virus yet leaving your house every day to help others.
