Neglecting the threat

Letter April 29, 2020
It is up to the so called ‘world leaders’ to either change their priorities, recognise their adversary

RAWALPINDI: After the inception of the atomic age, a new layer of fear spread throughout the world. Nuclear weapons were said to be able of causing colossal destruction in no time. The balance of power seemed substantially disrupted and a global war seemed inevitable. Intellectuals across the globe were speculating the possibilities of a war with most of them anticipating it to be nuclear. There were just a handful of people who were analysing the future in a different way. These people forecast a biological calamity that was about to strike the globe. Unfortunately, most people did not pay heed to it. Now we remain helpless amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Warning had fallen on deaf ears.

If at that time the incumbents had realised this danger and invested in making the earth purer and resistant to such disasters rather than spending trillions on expanding their arsenals, the scenario would have been a completely different one. We were so ill-prepared to battle this pandemic that almost 4 months have passed and we are not even able to precisely study and analyse the virus from all aspects.

It is up to the so called ‘world leaders’ to either change their priorities, recognise their adversary and alter the fate of the world or once again delve into diplomacy and ignore this red flag too leaving the earth vulnerable to calamities.
