Spreading awareness on deadly virus

Letter March 20, 2020
In the present situation, only those who have machine hearts can stoop so low as to thrive on other’s misery.

KARACHI: In the wake of COVID-19, people on social media have been spreading messages about being responsible for oneself and others around them by staying in so that we are protected from any unnecessary risk of contracting the virus. While this effort is all in good spirit, there is an essential caveat to this precautionary measure during these trying times.

In a country like ours where a lot of the population live on day-to-day wages, it is almost impossible for a wide majority to give up their livelihood and sit at home. It is only us, the fortunate ones, who earn enough and therefore are able to save up to be able to stay in and store essential items for the rest of the month. Furthermore, the recent method of hoarding on food and other household supplies shows a lot about the mentality of individuals in situations of crisis. It really is frightening to think that we can, as a community, become so selfish so as to fulfil our personal supplies and not worry about the next person.

A poor individual is unable to purchase enough for the week, let alone for the whole month. A lot of them do not have a roof over their heads and cannot go to hospital to seek medical help.

With the situation getting worse from bad every day, it is important to understand as a nation that while we practise social distancing, we also must also have empathy and kindness. Help out those who are struck with problems of poverty, the elderly and all those who are unable to fend for themselves. Simple acts like giving time off to your house helpers and personal drivers will not only keep them safe but will save us from potentially contracting this virus.

These are also some messages that must be spoken of over social media, apart from the already circulating news regarding updates and the importance of social distancing. The situation cries out kindness and brotherly human feeling. In the present situation, only those who have machine hearts can stoop so low as to thrive on other’s misery.
