Synchronised government

Letter March 19, 2020
It will portray a better image of governance to foreign governments and to lender agencies

KARACHI: Although the Sindh government received much appreciation from citizens for the timely decision of partially locking down the Sindh province with regard to the coronavirus, it seems that the central government is not synchronised with them at all. Provinces are taking major decisions as per their own wisdom and provincial consultations without taking the central government into confidence. It gives a very bad impression to citizens and portrays weak governance signals to foreign countries. Regardless of the intensity of the situation the central government should have clear cut standard operating procedures in place which give a comprehensive strategy as to how to reach a decision and how to implement it. In a nutshell, provinces should discuss any matter internally, reach a decision at the provincial level and then should consult with the central government. The central government should take timely notice, and keep in constant touch with all the provinces to discuss and release policies for all the provinces to follow. This way all the provinces will be aligned in a cohesive manner. It will portray a better image of governance to foreign governments and to lender agencies
