MUMBAI: This is with reference to Feisal Naqvi’s article of July 26 titled “With friends like these” where the writer has referred to a column written by Shashi Tharoor in Deccan Chronicle, July 21.
Every country has the right to a strong military. Shashi Tharoor was saying that the Pakistani military should remain under civilian control and that its generals should be held accountable to the government so as to prevent the likelihood of an ambitious general, thinking himself to be Alexander’s protégé, starting a war without consulting the civilian establishment. Musharraf’s stupidity in 1998 on Kargil put 1.5 billion people at the risk of a nuclear holocaust.
