Institutions have been ridden with corruption because there is no accountability process.
KHAIRPUR MIRS: In today’s competitive world, the phenomenon of governance and development is inter-connected. One can’t even think of development without a sound governance system. The term governance means the system of government which functions as organs to run state machinery. There are various determinants of governance such as rule of law, effective institutions, just judicial systems and transparency and accountability of the government. Development can be conceptualised as the efforts of the state with the aim to increase its human resources to attain maximum outcome of the production for the benefit of the majority.
The association between governance and development is tangible. Good governance always ensures rule of law according to which law would be supreme and everyone would abide by it. For the development of any state, the rule of law is imperative along with a just judiciary system that ensures upholding of justice and protection of human rights. Good governance brings reforms and structural changes in institutions so that they perform effectively by constructing basic infrastructures for smooth economic activity. Good governance alleviates poverty by creating a socioeconomic system which increases the wealth of the state that in return can be used for various developmental schemes. Good governance ensures transparency and accountability of institutions which is necessary for the development of any country in the long run.
Unfortunately, poor governance in Pakistan has been a major obstacle towards development. The breach of the rule of law has wreaked havoc in the country. Extremism and terrorism can also be considered as the outcome of the violation of the law. Ineffective judicial systems exacerbate the situation by not ensuring the rights of citizens.
Institutions have been ridden with corruption because there is no accountability process. If Pakistan as a country wants to attain its real position and is willing to enlist its name among the top developed nations then we need to do more on the front of governance.
