In use since 1936

Letter July 25, 2011
The fans in the Sindh High Court — all of them are operational — were installed in 1936.

KARACHI: Recently I went to the chamber of a senior advocate. His office is situated right in front of the city courts complex in an old building that seems it was built before Partition. In his room, what struck me was that the fan on the ceiling seemed very old. However, it was working fine. I ask the advocate when the fan was installed and he told me that it was purchased from Amritsar in 1943 and installed in the current office in 1948. He further told me that the fans which are presently in the Sindh High Court — and all of them are operational — were installed in 1936. They are manufactured in Britain, he said. This sounds amazing given that most electrical appliances that one buys and uses these days do not last very long — certainly not 75 years!
