Modi and minorities

The apathetic Modi regime is not expected to fulfil the state obligations to look after the citizens indiscriminately

ISLAMABAD: Narendra Modi’s government has started maltreating Muslims, Christians, Sikhs and even low-caste Hindus in India. However, the latter, after encountering atrocities are leaving Modi’s blood thirsty Hinduism. Indian leadership is constantly exploiting their extremist elements and misinformed people against Pakistan and Indian minorities, especially Muslims. The repeal of Article 370 and 35A of the Indian constitution under Modi’s leadership has badly hurt Muslims of india-held Kashmir. Indian forces have imposed a lockdown to avoid reaction of the majority of inhabitants of the valley. Similarly, the passage of citizenship amendment and NRC laws in India has seriously annoyed particularly its Muslim population and other communities including enlightened Hindu population. The Modi regime did not tolerate natural reaction against the laws and has brutally tortured the peaceful protesters though a large number of states have also denounced the laws publicly. The latest brutal incident of killing and inuring peaceful Muslim population as well as large scale looting of property in Indian capital New Delhi amounts to massacre. The killing of the innocent Muslim population cannot be taken simply as ‘riots’. A humanitarian crisis has occurred in India which has claimed dozens of precious human lives.

It is high time that the world community paid attention to check human rights abuses and stopped the Indian government from committing atrocities and excessive use of state power against minorities. The international democratic forces should feel their moral obligation to pressure Modi into withdrawing recent amendments to citizenship laws for the sake of justice and in the interest of peace in the region. The world governments, philanthropists, humanitarian agencies as well as NGOs should come to the rescue of innocent minority being targeted in India. They are expected to step forward to take measures for the rehabilitation of the affected population in New Delhi and other parts of India in the name of humanity. Unfortunately, the apathetic Modi regime is not expected to fulfil the state obligations to look after the citizens indiscriminately.

It is the need of the hour for the two governments to make an International treaty functional without further loss of time.
